There were around 10,000 car brands and designers - most of them have disappeared. The Riley brand is also one of these vanished brands. The Riley Engine Co. produced the first production car in 1905. Riley's sports cars celebrated various racing successes until the Riley brothers went bankrupt in 1938 and Riley went to Lord Nuffield, who later co-founded BMC.
