Connoisseurs and friends of the Aston Martin brand had eagerly awaited the Bonhams auction in Newport. The 1960 Aston Martin DB 4 GT 'Jet' Bertone had been announced as the highlight, with an estimated price of 2.8 to 3.8 British pounds (4 to 5.4 million Swiss francs or 3.3 to 4.4 million euros), expectations were high. And they were fulfilled, as a buyer in the room paid 3.25 million pounds (3.83 million euros or 4.78 million Swiss francs) for the unique piece.
Single-stamp auction
It is rare to see almost the entire oeuvre of a brand being brought together for an auction, thus creating an almost comprehensive gauge of the value of the individual vehicles. This was the case in Newport on May 18, 2013. 46 Aston Martin and one Lagonda were waiting for new owners, including 4 early Astons from the post-war period, 4 DB 4, 5 DB 5, 7 DB 6, 3 DBS, 4 DB7, 10 V8 etc.
Three four-door saloons
The three four-door limousines provided an interesting insight into the limousine production of the Aston Martin and Lagonda brands. A Lagonda 3 Litre Tickford Saloon from 1956 was worth 64,220 pounds, or 75,780 € or 94,403 CHF to the buyer.
The even rarer Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide Sports Saloon from 1963, built in small numbers at the time on the basis of the DB 4, was sold for 147,100 pounds or 173,578 € or 216,237 CHF.
The 1988 Aston Martin Lagonda Series 4 achieved 36,800 pounds, or 43,424 € or 54,096 CHF, which is still very little money for what was once the most expensive car in the world.
Snow finds highly valued
Three quasi-barn finds were highly prized in Newport. A trio - a DB 4, 5 and 6 each - sold together for an almost unbelievable 609,300 pounds. The cars had been purchased by the sellers more than three decades ago and had been waiting in garages and barns for a better future. The 1966 DB 6 was worth three times the estimated price to the buyer, who paid £107,900, or €127,322, or CHF 158,6213 for the restoration object.
And the 1964 DB 5, which last changed hands for £1,500, now fetched £320,700, 200 times more.
Even top-restored vehicles are expensive
Not only the restoration objects beat their estimates, but also top-restored vehicles were traded at high prices. Lot 223, a DB 5 from 1965, which had been restored to new condition by Aston Martin Engineering, was listed with a sales price of £460,700, equivalent to €543,626 or CHF 543,626. A beautiful DB 6 Volante Cabriolet was equally expensive.
In general, it can be said that the differences in value between DB 4 and DB 6 seem to be diminishing, DBS prices are slowly increasing, early DB 2s are still valued relatively low in principle and rare models or one-offs justify significant exclusivity premiums. This can at least be seen in Lot 219, a left-hand drive SWB Vantage Volante Special Edition from the year 2000, which sold for the impressive sum of £404,700, or €477,546, or CHF 549,909.
