Preview (beginning of the article)
The RM auction at the Arizona Biltmore Resort on January 18, 2013 lasted almost five hours, or around 290 minutes to be precise. The huge golf & convention complex, which looks like a private castle from the 20th century, is located at the foot of Camelback and is an oasis for the well-heeled, the very well-heeled. An ideal place, therefore, to present the jewels with an average price of around half a million dollars. The bidding community in attendance - around 400 to 500 international guests with a significant Eastern European and Russian contingent - was correspondingly generous. The presentation and surroundings had a touch of Hollywood about them; the whole scene seemed surreal and exciting at the same time, even for Americans. And people enjoyed playing along in this casino of the rich. Although the quality of the vehicles was right and the process was orderly, the auction felt a little like a cocktail of James Bond, David Copperfield and Tom Jones.
