The RM/Sotheby's auction in Monaco had been eagerly awaited, especially after the news that Max Girardo had left the successful auction house. However, his replacement, with a Dutch background and a similar talent for languages, did a pretty good job. The fact that the auction as a whole fell somewhat short of the certainly high expectations can certainly not (only) be blamed on him. It was more due to the choosy attitude of the bidders and perhaps the overall somewhat subdued atmosphere.
Little euphoria at the Quattroruote collection
The Quattruote collection auctioned from midday comprised 38 vehicles and engines; the Lancia Lambda was withdrawn even before the auction began. On average, the lots realized only about three quarters of the expected prices, but there were also vehicles (and engines) that sailed well above the estimate, such as the engine-transmission combination for the Fiat 525 N or a Singer racing bike.
The most expensive car, a Bugatti 57 from 1939 as a Gangloff Cabriolet, did more than respectably with a sales price of EUR 660,800 or CHF 726,880, while other vehicles certainly suffered from the fact that they were offered without a minimum price. A 1927 Fiat 509 A Spider, for example, sold for just EUR 20,000 or CHF 20,000 instead of the expected EUR 40,000 to 60,000. For a 1948 Studebaker Champion, the buyer only had to pay EUR 6160 or CHF 6776 (including commission).
NART Spider not sold despite 17 million bid
The bravest bidder offered EUR 17 million after a comparatively short bidding war that started at 13 million and continued first in one-million and then half-million increments, but this was not enough to win the rare open Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spider from 1968, one of just under two handfuls built by Scaglietti.
This was not to be the only expensive Ferrari to break down. The NART Spider shared its fate with a 250 GT Lusso from 1964 (EUR 1.35 million highest bid), a 330 GTS from 1967 (EUR 1.8 million), the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1972 (EUR 2 million) as well as three Berlinetta Boxers and other sports cars from Maranello.
340 America as top seller
Nevertheless, one Ferrari remained the most expensive car at the auction, the 340 America as a 1951 Touring-Barchetta, which was worth EUR 7.28 million (CHF 8.008 million) to the buyer, saved the Reds' honor.
The 275 GTS from 1966 (EUR 1.792 million, CHF 1.971 million) and the 212 Inter as a Vignale Cabriolet from 1952 (EUR 1.176 million, CHF 1.294 million) were also purchased.
The early Dino 206 GT from 1968 provided a positive surprise, fetching EUR 560,000 (CHF 616,000) including surcharge/commission instead of the expected EUR 400,000 to 450,000.
Battle of the rally cars - Renault versus Peugeot
Two laurel-winning rally cars from the 1980s were up for auction at RM: a Renault 5 Turbo Group 4 from 1982 and a Peugeot 205 T16 Group B from 1984.
While bids for the Peugeot stalled at EUR 500,000 (71% of the estimate), interested parties bid up to EUR 425,000 (142% of the median estimate) for the Renault, which meant a purchase price of EUR 476,000 or CHF 523,600 including commission (12%), while the Peugeot declined.
Rally cars were nevertheless in demand, with the 1961 Austin-Healey works three-liter selling for EUR 403,200 (CHF 443,520), well above its estimated value.
The surprising Aston Martin Zagato of the modern era
At EUR 180,000 to 230,000, the 2004 Aston Martin DB AR1 Zagato had a relatively moderate estimate, but bidders were prepared to go further. The hammer only fell at EUR 300,000, i.e. 146% of the estimate, which made the Aston EUR 336,000 or CHF 369,600 expensive.
The neo-classic thus made many older investment sports cars look old, as many of these fell well short of their estimates but were still sold at high prices. Examples of this include the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, which found a new owner for EUR 1.232 million or CHF 1.355 million.
The price of EUR 896,000 or CHF 985,600 for the Porsche 959 Komfort Stage II from 1988 is certainly no mean feat either, even if more than a million had actually been expected.
Expensive leisure vehicles
The surprise actually came at the end of the auction, when the last cars went under the hammer. Lots 284 to 286 were all leisure vehicles, and these were obviously very popular at the Monegasque auction.
Even the Cagiva Moke, a late licensed version of the Austin Mini Moke from 1993, attracted an impressive bid of 45,000 instead of the estimated EUR 10,000 to 15,000, which was 3.6 times the estimate.
But that's not all. The following Fiat 500 Mare from 1960 was also bid up to 47,000, costing the buyer EUR 52,640 or CHF 57,904.
And the following HAZ Buggy from 1969 based on a VW was then offered almost three times as much as expected, after three telephone bidders apparently simply did not want to give up. EUR 56,000 or CHF 61,600 is certainly a proud price for a buggy. However, it is not possible to deduce a trend.
Bargain
Some of the highest bidders got their dream classic at a reasonable price, at least compared to the estimate. The third-built Bristol 400 as a Pininfarina Cabriolet from 1947, for example, found its way into a new garage for EUR 224,000 (CHF 246,400); the estimate had been EUR 300,000 to 400,000.
And an early Jaguar XK 120 Roadster with aluminum bodywork from 1950 was sold for EUR 257,600 (CHF 283,360), again a significant discount compared to the EUR 325,000-450,000 estimate.
The bidders for Peter Klasen's 1965 Porsche 911 "007" were also unwilling to follow the auction house's recommendations, with the Artcar only fetching the buyer EUR 84,000 or CHF 92,400 instead of the expected EUR 200,000 to 300,000.
31 vehicles unsold
A total of 31 vehicles had to be reported as unsold. This was more than a third of the lots in the evening auction. Or 13.5 million euros in estimated value. A good ten million euros had been bid for them.
In addition to the NART Spider and the other Ferrari mentioned above, the spurned lots also included a 1982 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale (highest bid EUR 280,000), a 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS (EUR 320,000), an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider from 1930 (EUR 800,000), a Group 4 works Alpine A110 (EUR 190,000), a Lancia Flaminia Sport ZAgato from 1959 (EUR 380,000) or a Lamborghini 350 GT from 1966 (EUR 550,000). There was no shortage of good bids, but the consignors obviously had much higher expectations.
This also applied to the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ from 1965, which "only" elicited EUR 700,000 in bids instead of the EUR 950,000 to 1.2 million hoped for.
Vehicles auctioned
The following list shows all vehicles on offer with estimated prices (Est) and highest bids (Hbid) in EUR, as well as sales prices (VPreis) in EUR and CHF (conversion at the daily exchange rate: 1 EUR = 1.10 CHF). The "%Est" column compares the highest bids with the average estimated price. "Annull." stands for withdrawn lots. All data without guarantee.
