"Driving into Summer" was the name of RM/Sotheby's online-only auction, which ran from May 21 to 29, 2020. In contrast to other auction houses, there was no live event at all and only online bidding was permitted over the course of eight days. The public therefore stayed at home and was able to enjoy a much larger selection of photos for preliminary clarifications.
Anyone who suspected that this auction would mainly feature cheap cars and mass-produced items would have to think again. On average, each of the 193 vehicles was valued at over USD 105,000, and the total volume on offer amounted to USD 20.37 million.
In the end, a total of USD 16.4 million was offered, or USD 85,176 per vehicle, i.e. 81%. 59% of the vehicles were sold, for an average of USD 73,977.
Varied offer
The range of vehicles on offer was varied and extensive. On average, the vehicles, which also included motorcycles, a tractor and a ship, were around 42 years old.
22 Porsches were balanced out by 22 Ferraris, with 16 Fords, 14 Mercedes-Benzes and 12 Chevrolets forming further brand highlights.
While 50% of all Ferraris were sold, this figure was only 45% for Porsche, but 81% for Ford, 64% for Mercedes-Benz and even 75% for Chevrolet.
Eight Rolls-Royces and eight Bentleys were offered, and exactly half of each were sold. Jaguar had an easier time of it, with five of the seven vehicles (71%) finding a new owner.
Only just over a quarter of the vehicles on offer were from the USA; on average, they were more successful with bidders, but were also mostly in the lower price range.
Ten cars over USD 300,000
As many as ten cars were sold for over USD 300,000.
At the top of the list, a 2003 Ferrari Enzo fetched USD 2.64 million (EUR 2.376 million, CHF 2.534 million; 87% of the median estimate was bid).
The new owner paid USD 2.31 million (EUR 2.079 million, CHF 2.218 million) for the Ferrari 288 GTO from 1985 on offer.
And an almost new 2017 Ford GT cost USD 836,000 (EUR 752,400, CHF 802,560).
The most expensive older classic was a Ferrari 250 GT Ellena from 1958, which passed into new hands for USD 671,000 (EUR 6,3,900, CHF 644,160; not far from the estimated value).
Old cars had a harder time
The pre-war fraction was not particularly well represented with 14 cars, half of them could not be sold, and all but one of the cars sold did not reach their estimated value.
The 1939 Delahaye USA Pacific sold for a relatively high price, with the highest bid being USD 200,000 and the sale price USD 220,000 (EUR 198,000, CHF 211,200).
Whether this car (lot 153) can really be considered a pre-war classic, however, is an open question. After all, it is based on a custom-built tubular frame chassis over which a plastic body in the style of the Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic was fitted. The engine is a 300 hp BMW 12-cylinder, which transmits its power to an automatic gearbox. The interior is in Art Deco style and the date of construction on the papers is 2016. However, the result is certainly visually impressive.
Good results for the youngtimers
Cars built between 1990 and 2000 performed better among bidders than the other cars, with some even selling well above their estimated values.
A 1995 BMW 850 CSI realized USD 102,300 (EUR 92,070, CHF 98,208), a 1996 Dodge Viper GTS was sold for USD 64,900 (EUR 58,410, CHF 62,304), well above expectations.
And a 1996 Maserati Ghibli Cup realized almost three times the estimate at USD 23,650 (EUR 21,285 or CHF 40,128).
A Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II from 1990 also did well and was worth USD 231,000 (EUR 207,900, CHF 221,760) to its new owner.
However, there were also disappointments. For example, a 1990 BMW M3 was auctioned for just USD 35,200 (EUR 31,680, CHF 33,792), with the highest bid coming in at just 64% of the median estimate.
Surprises at the top and bottom
It was not only the aforementioned Maserati Ghibli Cup that surprised positively; among the "winners" was a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair 95 Rampside Pickup, for which the highest bid was twice as high as the median estimate.
A 1964 Fiat 500 Jolly, although only a conversion, also achieved a high selling price of USD 77,000.
A Willy's M38 from 1951 (USD 61,600) was also worth a lot to the bidders.
But there was also the opposite situation and therefore real bargains. A Piaggio Ape from 1978 was sold for just USD 14,300, with an estimate of USD 40,000 to 60,000.
An Autobianchi Bianchina Panoramica from 1966 found its way into a new garage for USD 10,175, a good quarter of its estimated value.
An Austin America from 1969, which we would probably call an Austin 1100 in this country, and which was really appropriately labeled with the license plate "Jaune", came to just USD 3960. That must have upset the consignor, but "no reserve" also means more risk.
Things also went unexpectedly badly for a 1967 Maserati Mistral 4.0 with aluminum bodywork, which passed into new hands for just USD 62,500 (EUR 56,250, CHF 60,000).
A Fiat 124 Sport Spider from 1976 also appeared favorably priced with a sale price of USD 12,650.
Overall, RM/Sotheby's should certainly be satisfied with a turnover of USD 16.3 million, it could have been much worse and they are happy to be back in business at all after the Corona lockdown days anyway.
