Summary
There have been around 10,000 car brands and designers - most of which have disappeared. One of these vanished brands is Maybach, which, along with Mercedes-Benz, was Germany's most famous car brand. It lived twice; once from 1921 to 1941 and the second time from 1998 to 2012.

Maybach was Germany's most famous car brand alongside Mercedes-Benz and before Horch. After today's Daimler arch-rivals BMW and the Volkswagen Group reached an agreement with Audi in 1998 on the peaceful takeover of the Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands, the Daimler-Chrysler Group decided to bring the Maybach brand back to life as a counterweight. However, this name was now only known to history buffs and required extensive image building. Wilhelm Maybach had helped Gottlieb Daimler to realize his first motor car in 1886. Benz, Daimler and Maybach were Germany's great car pioneers. Maybach left Mercedes manufacturer Daimler in 1907, and in 1909 his son Karl founded Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH in Friedrichshafen. This company designed airship and aircraft engines.
