Preview (beginning of the article)
As part of the Race Retro weekend in Coventry, the specialists from Iconic Auctioneers put 150 cars (and a trailer) worth almost £8 million under the hammer alongside motorcycles and automobilia. In front of a large audience and in cramped conditions, 75 percent of the vehicles, which were on average 44 years old, were sold. On average, 88% of the median estimate was bid, a good figure and a sign of cautious estimates. The cars auctioned in two phases consisted of around two-fifths racing cars and three-fifths classics of all ages. Only one pre-war car was auctioned, a 1933 Riley 14/6 Alpine Tourer consigned directly by Richard Hammond (ex Top Gear), which sold for £25,875 (EUR 29,498, CHF 27,169), even higher than expected.
