Summary
The 49th Geneva Motor Show opened its doors to the general public from March 1 to 11, 1979. Over half a million visitors responded to the call and did not necessarily get to see a huge number of world firsts, but many interesting further developments and a large number of attractions that could not be seen every day. Among the highlights were the Mercedes-Benz C 111, the BMW M1, the VW Golf convertible and the 16-cylinder Sbarro Royale. This Salon report looks back to 1979 and shows the attractions in over 120 photos.

The 49th Geneva Motor Show, which presented the latest and most beautiful cars in the world to an interested public from March 1 to 11, 1979, got off to the best possible start. In 1978, all sales records had been broken in Switzerland and almost 16 percent more cars had been sold than in the previous year. Volkswagen was at the top of the list of new registrations, but Opel was only just behind thanks to strong growth, followed by Ford (Europe), Renault and Fiat. Toyota established itself in 6th place, with Citroën, Peugeot, BMW and Audi completing the top ten. In terms of model series, Volkswagen came out on top with the Golf, followed by the Opel Rekord, Ford Taunus, Opel Kadett and Ascona.
