Preview (beginning of the article)
RM's Motor City auction in St. John (Michigan) was a largely American affair. Over three quarters of the vehicles on offer were from the USA, with just 19 cars coming from Europe or Japan. Around three quarters of the vehicles that went under the hammer found new owners. The sales result amounted to around USD 7.5 million (EUR 5.5 million, CHF 6.8 million). The brisk trade was supported by around a quarter of the offers that were waiting for bids without a minimum price. On average, USD 114,506 (Euro 84,735 or CHF 103,056) was bid per vehicle (before 10% sales commission). This clearly documented that this auction was not primarily for high-priced classics, but for mid-priced rarities. It was interesting to note that half of the vehicles on offer were built before or during the Second World War - such a high proportion of very old vehicles is unusual at auctions.
