The collection reserves of the Citroën Conservatoir, which forms part of the PSA Group's "l'Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS" historical exhibition, have to be relocated.
On the occasion of this move, the company also wanted to tidy up a little and made 65 vehicles available for the auction of the French auction house Leclere Motorcars on December 10, 2017, supplemented by around 90 automobilia.
Déjà vu?
The whole auction was somewhat reminiscent of RM's 2000 Wheels of Milan (Duemila Ruote) last year. 65 not necessarily well-kept, but special car lots came under the hammer and the 311 bidders outbid the estimated prices, in some cases massively.
On average, more than twice the median estimate was paid for a car, and the swings were even more massive, with a regrettable-looking Citroën Ami 6 from 1961 going for a total of EUR 8960 (CHF 10,394) instead of EUR 800 to 1200.
Only ten lots failed to reach the median estimate.
In total, buyers paid around EUR 708,000 (CHF 821,400) for the 65 cars, i.e. an average of EUR 10,893 (EUR 12,636).
Off-road cars in demand
Three Citroën Méhari with all-wheel drive from 1979 were on sale, all of which pulverized their estimates. Lot number 116, a green Méhari, for example, sold for EUR 24,640 (CHF 28,582), with an estimate of EUR 2,000 to 4,000, which is certainly reasonable given its condition.

Lot 132, another green Méhari 4x4, was even more expensive, finding a new garage (or rather restoration workshop) for EUR 28,000 or CHF 32,480, 3.5 times the estimate.
The FAF from 1980 was also sold at a very high price, EUR 21,280 or CHF 24,685, 8.5 times the estimate.
Even the VW Iltis, which Citroën wanted to sell to the French army with its own engine, was sold for EUR 10,080 (CHF 11,693) for twice the estimated value, albeit equipped with a VW engine.
Less interest in concept cars
A whole series of concept cars and show cars went under the hammer on December 10, 2017, including a Citroën Xénia from 1980 (Trevor Fiore), the Eco 2000 Blanche from 1983, the Citela from 1991 and the Tubyk from 2010.
These vehicles were not entirely convincing; some of them lacked a drive or, in the case of the 1995 AX électrque Axel, a battery. On average, these cars only achieved 115% of their mean estimated value, the Cactus Concept from 2013 only achieved half the estimate and the Xantia Break from 1996 fared no better. The worst hit was the 1980 Xénia, which passed into new hands for 36% of its estimated value.
The most expensive of these show cars was the 2010 Tubyk, which fetched EUR 36,960 (CHF 42,874).
The creations of Franco Sbarro fared little better than the Citroën concept cars. Six of these vehicles were auctioned at an average of just above the estimate, with the 2005 C4 Coupé R-Pur attracting the highest bids.
High flyer
The most expensive "normal" Citroën was the XM V6 Executive Phase 2 from 2000, which sold for an impressive EUR 33,600 (CHF 38,976) instead of the expected EUR 4000 to 6000. This was considered a record for this vehicle type.
Even the oldest cars in the auction, a 5 HP from 1924 and four different C4s built between 1929 and 1932, sold for significantly more than expected, despite their rather modest external condition.
The auction was therefore a success, with the individual cars practically scattered to the four winds, with 63 different bidders (including the 90 automobiles, including photos, trademarks, racing suits and the like).
Will this example set a precedent and will other museums also start to sell off their decommissioned collections?
