On August 18, 2022, the new auction house Broad Arrow Auctions held its first auction during Monterey Car Week. Of 90 cars, 79 (87.8 %) were sold at the time, for an average of USD 682,206. Now, of course, it was exciting to see how things would go the second time around.
On August 17 and 18, 2023, BAA offered 169 vehicles worth around one hundred million. However, things didn't go quite as well as the first time. 142 cars, or 84%, were sold, but the Monterey Jet Center only generated a good half of the targeted turnover, a total of USD 57.6 million. On average, interested parties offered 79% of the median estimate. Of the vehicles offered with a reserve price, 60% were "no reserve" and just 58% found a new garage.
Compared to the other auction houses, however, BAA did not do badly overall, with sales rates falling there too.
Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari
Only around a third of the vehicles on offer came from American manufacturers, so it was no surprise that the brands most strongly represented were Porsche (21 vehicles), Mercedes-Benz (16) and Ferrari (14, plus 3 Dino).
While 71 and 75 percent of the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz sold respectively, a sales rate of 86% and bids at 90% of the median estimate were in favor of Ferrari.
Jaguar and Packard performed even better with nine and eight vehicles respectively. They were all sold, albeit at a considerable discount in the case of Jaguar.
Overall, the six cars from Ford were the best valued, as they were bid almost exactly at the estimated value and sold in their entirety.
The most valuable
In the end, the ten most expensive cars sold included three Ferraris, two Mercedes-Benzes and two Duesenbergs as well as a Porsche, an Oldsmobile and a Bugatti.
Bidders paid the most for a 1995 Ferrari F50, which passed into new hands for USD 4.24 million. It was followed by a Ferrari 288 GTO from 1985 for USD 3.91 million and a Ferrari 250 GT/Lusso from 1964 for USD 2.81 million, the latter with a price well above expectations.
From Mercedes-Benz, a 300 SL Gullwing from 1956 for USD 1.93 million and a 500 K Cabriolet A from 1935 for USD 1.71 million made it into the top ten, and from Porsche a 918 Spyder from 2015 for USD 1.985 million.
However, only six of the ten cars previously estimated to be the most valuable were sold.
The Porsche RS Spyder Evo from 2007 (highest bid USD 4.7 million), the Maserati A6G/54 Zagato Berlinetta from 1956 (USD 3 million), the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 "Safari Rallye" from 1973 (USD 2.2 million) and the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet from 1966 (USD 2 million), in which the British Queen and the Apollo astronauts were chauffeured, were left standing.
Bargains
Buyers paid significantly less than expected for some cars. For example, the Peugeot Type BP1 Bébé from 1911 cost only USD 5600 as a restoration object instead of the estimated USD 25,000 to 35,000.

A Mercedes-Benz 190 SL from 1961 could be had for USD 100,800 (estimate USD 175,000 to 225,000).
A BMW Alpina C1 2.3 from 1984, an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Touring as a Berlinetta Aerodinamica from 1939, a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 from 1963, a Volkswagen Samba from 1958 and a Mercedes-Benz 560 SL from 1988 were also sold for half the expected price, so to speak.
Even the 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 concept car could be bought considerably cheaper than estimated, USD 1.765 million was enough despite an estimated value of USD 2 to 3 million).
Super classics in the frame
The just over 72 super classics on offer sold just as well as the rest of the range, and they differed only slightly from the other vehicles in terms of estimated value.
Lovers of special bodies were able to strike comparatively cheaply, as a 1965 Citroën DS 21 Chapron Concorde cost only USD 78,400 (instead of USD 125,000 to 150,000). And a 1953 Cunningham C3 Vignale, estimated at between USD 800,000 and 1 million, was available for USD 610,000.
The three Dino 206/246 GT/GTS, which were estimated to be quite expensive, were all sold, but in some cases for considerably less than the estimate.
A 1953 Bentley Mark IV Graber DHC estimated at between USD 425,000 and 475,000 sold for USD 350,000.
Expensive Honda
The buyer paid USD 632,000 (EUR 581,440, CHF 556,160) for a 1995 Honda NSX Type R. Hardly ever before has an NSX reached such a price.
However, according to the BA, only 483 examples of the right-hand drive Type R were built between 1992 and 1995 and the mileage of the white mid-engined coupé on offer was only 7000 km.
Toyota's exotic competitor, the 2000 GT from 1967, nevertheless cost a little more, namely USD 940,000.
Note: More than half a dozen of the cars on offer were only sold after the auction closed. In this case, the sales prices had to be estimated on the basis of the last bid.
