Bonham's auction at the Goodwood Members' Meeting is already well established. On April 7, 2019, rare and special automobiles once again went under the hammer, with a total of 109 vehicle lots registered, five of which were withdrawn before the auction began. The total value amounted to over £10 million per car and was expected to be around EUR 117,000 or CHF 132,000.
However, the auction did not go quite as expected. Around two thirds of the cars were sold, with an average price of EUR 94,000 or CHF 107,000 per car.
High average age
With an average age of around 63 years, most of the vehicles were already comparatively old. The oldest car, a DeDion Bouton, dates back to 1901, as does the Toledo Model A Steam Runabout, not counting the Benz Patent Motor Car Replica.
The most recent vehicle was surprisingly a 2016 Ford Capri. The race car was completely rebuilt by Ric Wood Motorsport in 2015. £ 60'000 to 80'000 was set for the Essex V6 Capri, £ 58'650 (EUR 68'034, CHF 76'832) was achieved.
Brand diversity
With 62 brands represented, no large clusters can be expected, but Jaguar still managed 12 and Ford 9 vehicles, Porsche delivered 6 cars.
However, most brands, especially the more exotic ones, only managed one vehicle each, such as Adams, Alvis, Armstrong-Siddeley, Brewster, Bristol, Lola, Packard and Vauxhall.
Some withdrawals
Five cars were withdrawn before the auction, a high number.
Among them was the most expensive car, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Did the consignor get cold feet?
An Aston Martin DB5 as a bargain?
Well, EUR 833,946 or CHF 738,456 may not strike most people as a bargain price for an Aston Martin DB5.
However, almost EUR 400,000 was invested in the car with Vantage specification from 1964, which puts the purchase price into perspective.
The flat-floor E-Type without a flat floor
The 28th of 175 RHD flat-floor Jaguar E-Types built was announced with an estimated value of £60,000 to £70,000, which didn't sound like much, especially as the coupé was restored a few years ago.
However, during this work, the flat car floor had given way to normal footwells. In addition, the car had been standing for quite a while and required reconditioning work. However, the bidders took a different view to Bonhams and significantly overbid the estimate, so that the buyer ultimately paid £ 115,000 (EUR 133,400 or CHF 150,650) for the elegant coupé, including commission.
Little show star bonus
The Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB from 1974, which once belonged to Elton John, was traded for a rather moderate £ 224,250 (EUR 260,130, CHF 293,768), which was perhaps due to the fact that the estimate had been reduced by £ 25,000 before the auction due to technical problems (structural damage?).
The 1973 Excalibur Series II Roadster auctioned by James Knight at the end of the auction, whose first owner was Dean Martin, fared somewhat better.
£75,900 (EUR 88,044, CHF 99,429) was at least a little more than the estimate suggested.
Two six-cylinder MGs from the K series
Bonhams was able to offer two MGs from the K series. An MG Magnette K2 Sports from 1933 was estimated at £ 100,000 to £ 150,000, but was not worth that much to the bidders.
EUR 120,060, or CHF 135,585, was enough to buy the car, and only 72 percent of the median estimate was offered.
The restoration project for a 1933 K1 limousine was a different story: instead of the expected EUR 18,000 to 23,000, the highest bidder paid EUR 28,014 (CHF 31,637) for the car. Will it become a special or another limousine?
A special Vauxhall
The 1971 Vauxhall Firenza, in which Gerry Marshall once raced with some success in the British Touring Car Championship, was certainly an interesting vehicle. The racing car was to pass into new hands for £ 90,000 to £ 130,000.
However, interested parties were unwilling to bid that much, and with a top bid of £ 78,000, the racing car remained unsold, as did 35 other cars, including a Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Tourer with Vanden Plas bodywork from 1929 (top bid £ 550,000), an Aston Martin DB6 Volante from 1968 (£ 420,000), a Maserati Mistral Spider 3.7 (£ 310,000) and a Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV from 1988 (£ 240,000).
In fact, 12 of the 20 most expensive cars on offer remained unsold, while the ratio for the cheaper vehicles was significantly better.
Good mood
On average, 83% of the median estimate was bid, which is actually not a bad figure. The pre-war cars achieved slightly higher bids overall compared to the estimate, while the newer cars performed worse.
Fittingly, a 1923 Delage 14hp DIS Tourer sold for £49,450 (EUR 57,362, CHF 64,780), the highest bid was 72 percent higher than expected. The median estimate was exceeded for 18 cars. There was little sign of Brexit misery at Goodwood.
