With the Vauxhall C-Type, also known as the 20HP "Prince Henry", the British car manufacturer created a fast touring car that also excelled in motorsport events. It is one of the earliest sports cars ever built. A very special example was built in 1914 with the more powerful 25 HP engine and individual torpedo body by Hoskison Ltd in Aston Cross. This report portrays the sprightly pre-war classic and tells its interesting story.
The British automotive industry was one of the dominant forces before and after the Second World War. Vauxhall was one of the major manufacturers and, with its 10-4, 12-4 and 14-6 models, offered modern and affordable vehicles for the discerning motorist. This article focuses on the post-war "Twelve" and shows it in current and historical images.
Shortly after the war, there were hardly any car manufacturers offering sports cars. Initiative entrepreneurs such as the Zimmerli brothers stepped into the gap and built a two-seater roadster based on the Vauxhall Velox, which has survived to this day. In the mid-sixties, Vauxhall launched a bold attempt to blow the thick layer of dust off its model range. The XVR study, which was presented in Geneva in 1966, was radically different from any Vauxhall before or since, but unfortunately remained a finger exercise for the designers. This article tells the story of the Vauxhall XVR and shows it in many historic photos.
Who knows the Vauxhall brand? On the European continent, the British offshoot of what was once the world's largest car manufacturer, General Motors, was not very well known. The car, which was presented in London in the fall of 1970 and in Geneva in the spring of 1971, looked like nothing else the British volume manufacturer had ever produced under the umbrella of General Motors - and caused a stir even where the brand was completely unknown.
