Preview (beginning of the article)
On the occasion of the Audrain Concours d'Elégance, Bonhams organized an auction of 53 vehicles in Newport, Rhode Island (USA) on the afternoon of 29 September 2023, including a Vespa sidecar, a trailer and a fire engine. On average, the cars were 61 years old, 94% of the vehicles were sold and almost four-fifths of the lots went under the hammer without a minimum bid. The two collections of Andrew W. Edmonds and James Messenger dominated the auction, which lasted just under three hours. While Edmonds offered American cars from the years 1915 to 1970, Messenger's cars covered a wider spectrum, ranging from replicas and classic cars converted into racing cars to super classics such as the 300 SL and the Porsche 356 Speedster.
