Bonhams' Aston Martin auction has been a tradition for several years now. This year, it no longer took place at Aston Martin but at the Wormsley Estate in West London. This noble estate is known for its cricket field and impressive library, among other things, and is located around 40 miles outside the capital.
32 cars and a tractor
The main items on offer were, of course, Aston Martin cars, a David Brown tractor and a Lagonda convertible. Two of the items were certainly restoration objects, but most of the vehicles were in beautiful condition.
The total value of the 33 vehicles was estimated at around £ 7.5 million (EUR 8.5 million, CHF 9.6 million), which meant that each lot was expected to fetch around £ 226,000 (EUR 258,000, CHF 290,000).
Only the tractor was auctioned without a reserve price and promptly achieved a result above expectations.
Relatively young offer
The average age of the vehicles was just over 37 years, which was also due to the fact that more than a third of the cars had only reached youngtimer age or were even younger.
The Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake from 2019 was actually still a new car and achieved a top bid of £ 550,000, which was well below the estimate of £ 625,000 to £ 750,000.
Valued Astons of the DB generation
The ultimate Bond Aston, a recently fully restored 1965 DB5, sold for an impressive £860,600 (EUR 981,084, CHF 1.102 million), well above the estimate.
Also above expectations was a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Convertible, which found a new garage for £810,200 (EUR 923,628, CHF 1.037 million).
Poor performance of sports cars from the 1980s and beyond
Of the newer Aston sports cars aged 40 years or less, only a few were able to win over the public. A V8 Series 4 from 1979 did exceed the estimate by a considerable margin and was sold for £132,250.
However, the rest of the horde of V8 Astons were left standing, with the highest bids averaging around 77 percent of the median estimate. Many cars probably fell just short of the reserve price.
In contrast, brand new and significantly cheaper Astons were easier to sell, with a DB7 Volante, a DB9 Volante and a V12 Vantage Coupé finding new owners.
Earlier Astons more in demand
The older models, including the Lagonda 2.6 Litre Drophead Coupé from 1952, fared much better. With the exception of one restoration project (DB Mark III from 1959), all Astons before 1960 were sold, albeit not quite at the estimated value.
Only just under 40 percent of the cars were sold, 20 cars were left behind. Certainly not the result Bonhams had hoped for, even if the two top cars were successfully knocked down.
Interesting automobilia and memorabilia
The automobilia and memorabilia lots performed better, especially when they had to do with James Bond. In any case, some memorabilia changed hands well above expectations.
