Summary
On May 20, 2021, the Bonhams Auction took place in Amelia Island, with an audience and over 100 classic cars, more than half of which were from the pre-war period. It was a great pleasure to hold a traditional auction again after around 14 months, and the bidders responded with enthusiasm. 82 percent of the cars were sold, around a third of which exceeded expectations. Some of the pre-war cars were particularly surprising, with a Mercedes-Benz 500/540K finding a new owner for almost USD 5 million and a Mercer for over USD 2.4 million. This auction review analyzes the results, gives an impression of the atmosphere on site and shows all the cars in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
It had been fourteen months since the last traditional auction, explained auctioneer Rupert Banner. "Oh, we missed this fun, but it was worth waiting," he explained over the microphone, and this was obviously also the view of the bidders at the Bonhams auction on May 20, 2021 at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elégance. Although six of the 112 cars on offer had been withdrawn, emotions ran high for many of the remaining 106 classics and some bidders probably exceeded their personal pre-set limits. This probably explains the top prices that were achieved for some of the cars and for once it was not the super classics of the sixties and seventies that shone, but cars from the pre-war period.
