Summary
Mark Smith primarily collected American pre-war vehicles, but also admired European classics. 85 of his automobiles (and a caravan) were auctioned by Gooding & Co in Lynchburg on April 7, 2023. All the vehicles were sold, in some cases well above expectations. But there were also disappointments, for example with the only Mercedes. This auction review analyzes the results and shows some of the vehicles in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
Once again, Gooding & Co was able to bring an interesting car collection under the hammer. On April 7, 2023, 85 cars and a trailer worth USD 7.9 million went under the hammer at the Midland Motors building in Lynchburg. The cars were all offered without a reserve price, even those with estimated values of over USD 1 million. Surprises were therefore to be expected. Mark J. Smith was born in New York State in 1952. With a deep love for automobiles and all things antique, Mark cultivated a keen eye for quality and appreciated objects of rarity and historical significance. Throughout his life, he was tireless in his search for hidden treasures and favored original vehicles from the classic era for his collection.
