Johannes Hübner said at the beginning of the Auctionata auction on February 26, 2016 at 18:00, which was held as usual as an online auction with live internet television and room bidders.
Extensive offer
On offer were 39 vehicles with a total estimated value of 2.4 million euros or 2.6 million Swiss francs, which indicated an average value of EUR 61,077 per car.
The offer was broad and particularly characterized by nine Mercedes-Benz, four Ferrari, four Jaguar, three Alpina-BWM, three Porsche and three Volkswagen from the manufacturing countries Germany, Great Britain and Italy. The majority of the cars were built in the sixties, seventies and eighties. The vehicles came from a wide variety of countries, with Japanese and American consignments standing out.
The auction began with two restoration objects, which only led to a sale in the case of the Jaguar 240 from 1968, while obviously no one could warm to the interesting Citroën B 11 L from 1948.
More pleasure in the modern?
The best result of the auction was achieved by a Bentley Arnage from 1999, a "Green Label" version with a BMW twin-turbo engine, which sold for EUR 43,700 (CHF 47,633).
However, this was not the most expensive car at the auction. That honor went to the red Mercedes-Benz 190 SL from 1960, which found a new owner for EUR 103,500 (CHF 112,815).
In general, bidders had a somewhat easier time with newer cars than with older ones.
Right-hand drive cars were also not in great demand, although it was particularly surprising that no bids were received for the two MG B Jubeelie specimens with rubber bumpers.
Starting prices too high?
As in previous Auctionata auctions, the starting price was apparently too high a hurdle for some of the vehicles. In some cases, the fixed guidelines for increases may not have helped either. For example, the jump from 95,000 to 100,000 is apparently easier to take than the following jump from 100,000 to 110,000. In classic auctions, the auctioneer can always resort to smaller bidding steps in an emergency if the bids falter.
On average, the highest bids reached 66% of the estimated prices submitted. On closer inspection, these were certainly relatively high.
Many vehicles sold under reserve
15 cars were sold under reserve, for example all three Alpina cars, a B10 Coupé from 1986, a B10 saloon from 1989 and one from 1991.
The highest bids, which came in at around two thirds of the estimate, were submitted by the same English bidder in all three cases. This bidder later also secured the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3!
In general, one had the impression that Auctionata was a little lacking in bidders willing to bid, although there was no lack of internationality (USA, UK, Qatar, Switzerland, etc.). The Berliners could not really complain about a lack of attention, as the auction was advertised extensively throughout Europe.
It is noticeable that the online-only auctions are probably somewhat more difficult than the events in conjunction with a live location. The breadth of the offer could also have led to some bidders who were willing to buy getting involved at the wrong time or missing the moment.
However, this opened up the opportunity for potential buyers to find a bargain, which was also impressively demonstrated by the two Innocenti Mini Cooper from 1967/1968 with hammer prices of EUR 16,000 and EUR 14,000. Even the EUR 60,000 offered by the highest bidder for a restored Mercedes-Benz 280 SL (Padode) was of course only enough for a conditional sale, but who knows ...
Two fifths not sold
A total of 15 vehicles were left standing, while the others at least received bids that justified a conditional or definitive sale.
Among the spurned offers was the Citroën DS 21 factory cabriolet from 1967, for which the highest bid of 90,000 euros was not enough to sell.
The Lotus Cortina Mk2 from 1969, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE saloon from racing legend Otto Mathé and the Ferrari 328 GTB from 1986 (highest bid 55,000 euros) also failed to sell.
Happy buyers
The successful buyers, who were able to acquire a whole range of classics at affordable prices, were certainly satisfied. The fully restored Porsche 911 T 2.0 Coupé from 1969, for example, found a new owner for EUR 97,750 (CHF 106,548), the elegant late Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II from 1979 came into new hands for EUR 19,550 (CHF 21,310) and the BMW Z3 M Coupé from 1999 was sold for EUR 25,300 (CHF 27,577).
Some of the unsold vehicles could possibly still be purchased afterwards, so it might be worth asking on Auctionata.
In total, the auction lasted around 2.5 hours, von Hutten swung the hammer and Hübner kept adding exciting anecdotes, so that it was reasonably easy to hold out. However, some lots dragged on for a long time without a single bid being received.
Results in detail
The table shows all the vehicles on offer with starting and estimated prices as well as the highest bids in euros. The lots sold are listed with selling prices including 15% bidder's premium (but excluding VAT) in euros and CHF. The "Status" column indicates whether a lot has been "sold", sold under reserve ("sold under reserve") or "not sold". If "no bid" is shown, then the starting price was not bid by any interested party. In the "% Est" column, the highest bids are compared with the estimated price. All information is subject to change.
The table can be sorted as desired by clicking on the column headings.
