From the mid-seventies, fuel injection systems replaced carburetors for mixture preparation. The Bosch K-Jetronic in particular was widely used. However, as they get older, these systems tend to cause problems and can bring many an oldie to a standstill. This service article explains where they tend to jam and what you can do about it.

Lower fuel consumption, more power and greater reliability were what customers wanted from the cars of the 1980s. Fewer and fewer customers wanted to put up with the shortcomings of poorly maintained carburetor systems, especially if they owned a luxury-class vehicle. After various attempts - such as the Kugelfischer injection system in the BMW 2002 Turbo - Bosch set about developing a system that was scalable for all common engines. It had to be robust and reliable, inexpensive to manufacture and, of course, meet the manufacturers' requirements for improved efficiency and reliability. The result was the K-Jetronic, which made its debut in the Porsche Turbo and the VW Golf GTI.
