In 1981, Automobil Revue published several articles on the subject of "exhaust technology". These included a useful definition of terms. The emission of exhaust gas components from the engine into the atmosphere. Pollution of the air by certain substances, e.g. those contained in engine exhaust gas. Post-combustion of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Decomposition of nitrogen oxides. Specially designed post-combustion system located just behind the engine, which causes thermal oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) when additional air is supplied and the temperature level is sufficiently high.
