The Bernese and Vaud Alps, the noble starting location of Gstaad and main sponsor Audemars Piguet provided a prestigious setting for the second edition of the historic Gstaad Classic Rally (September 1 to 3, 2011). The special ambience and the excellent relationships of the French organizer also attracted owners of automotive treasures to the Saanenland.
For example, two Lancia Stratos in Group 4 trim, several Ferrari Berlinetta SWBs, two Alfa Giulia Tubolare (TZ) and 911 Porsches of all kinds were discovered on the start list at . Certain exotic cars such as a Ferrari Daytona with Le Mans history or a Ford GT40, whose engine unfortunately gave up the ghost after just a few kilometers, would probably have been better suited to a circuit, and the course also proved to be rather strenuous for the few pre-war vehicles.
No excessive risks taken
Some of the planned special stages in the Bern region and the Rhone Valley had to be cancelled, shortened or at least neutralized due to withdrawn permits or construction work. As the route was secret and the course could not be reconnoitred beforehand, even those drivers who were actually aiming for the best times and not just regularity were rather cautious in their approach. Particularly on the real special stages at Les Avants and Bex, the risk of damaging the cars, some of which were very valuable, prompted many participants to take their foot off the gas pedal. Hill climbs such as Massongex or Gurnigel and the slalom in Saanen offered much more calculable risks and therefore more "action".
Social and vehicle history event
The events could not be compared with "modern" high-speed rallies. However, most of the participants - with an above-average number of women at the wheel - had probably not come from near and far with the aim of relentlessly beating their beloved objects over the mountain roads. For them, this event was certainly a success even without the high-level sporting competitions, as there was also plenty on offer on a social level. And for fans of historic vehicles, at least the field of vehicles, the magnificent backdrop and the sound were just right.
