The death of Ronnie Peterson in Monza naturally overshadowed everything else that would have been important in September 1978. What a tragic loss for international motorsport, what a human tragedy. I always found Ronnie to be a friendly, informative person. Our first meeting was in Hockenheim, it must have been in 1968 or 1969, when he and Freddy Kottulinsky won the Formula 3 Nations Cup for Sweden. Ronnie drove a Tecno, Freddy a Lotus. The two of them were pretty rough with the competition, and the spectators in the packed Motodrom went wild with excitement. During the subsequent interview with the two of them for the sports agency "sid" and the "Rheinische Post", Ronnie said that "it's quite normal to drive so hard in Formula 3, otherwise you won't win anything". Around this time, he was already a big name in Formula 3, having had hair-raising duels with similarly young and wild drivers such as Clay Regazzoni, Tim Schenken, Patrick Depailler and his compatriot Reine Wisell. Peterson and Wisell were the kings of Formula 3 at the time, touring Europe as "The Swedish duo that crushes everything" (as the "Internationale Motorsport Chronik" respectfully titled them in 1968).
