On January 16, 1965, 237 vehicles start in Stockholm, Warsaw, Minsk, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Lisbon, Athens and Monte-Carlo. On January 23, 22 more will reach the finish line and Paddy Hopkirk, the 1964 winner, also drops out due to a broken suspension on his BMC Cooper S. This makes his comment on what was probably the most difficult rally of the sixties all the more astonishing. "Simply unbearable weather all along the route." And in the same breath: "It was great - by far the most beautiful rally I've ever taken part in." A participant standing next to him is said to have added: "Hopefully the weather will be even worse next year!"
