In 1954, a special stage - today the foundation of every modern rally - is added for the first time. Officials oversee this new idea. The winding route on the Col des Leques is suitable for this. Real special stages on closed-off stretches and driven at top speed would not be a feature of the rallies until the 1960s. This short section, uphill and downhill, places high demands on drivers and cars. The time controls at the beginning and end of the test track monitor the cut. The route is closed to other traffic. A hectic atmosphere spreads. Some participants have installed short-wave transmitters and receivers in their cars. Renault relies on a walkie-talkie army model. Others organize a relay service, still others use rockets, light morse signals or even carrier pigeons and many are amused by the "modern" aids.
