Neither the organizers nor the participants had expected this: sleet in Baden on the last weekend of April! In fact, the weather on April 22 and 23, 2016 did not show its best side, on the contrary. Saturday was completely wet with low temperatures, while Sunday started dry but remained cold and even turned into sleet in the afternoon. No wonder the spectators stayed at home, the main grandstand was not even opened. And so the brave drivers had to race in front of almost empty stands.
The program was quite varied. The dwarves created a great atmosphere, as the drivers didn't give each other a second despite the rain... But the Youngtimer Trophy, the HTGT and the FHR Endurance also provided interesting starting fields.
Due to the weather conditions, all races on Saturday had to be started as "wet races"; only those who came to the races on Sunday morning could count on a dry track.
Rear engine in the wet and in the dry
Interestingly, the winner of both the wet and dry races was Christoph Wilde in his Simca Rallye 2.
And behind them, the rear-engined NSU TT squad was also able to prevail against the front-wheel-drive Minis. However, the field of battling midgets seems to have shrunk somewhat in 2016, but perhaps the weather was also to blame.
The slightly different one-make cups
The field in the DMV-BMW Challenge was unusual, with BMW 3-series models from the E30, E36 and E46 series as well as a few M235i and an M5 competing. The fact that the winner here was twice Christian Kranenberg in an M3 GTS E46 and not a 325i E30 or M3 E30 was certainly not surprising given the wide range of model years.
The Porsche Club Challenge was also open exclusively to vehicles of the brand named in the title, with the majority being models from the 964, 996 and 997 series, although there were also 968 CS, 944 and 924 transaxle models to be found in between.
Close and less close decisions
The race in the Youngtimer Trophy A was close, with Michael Nolte in an Opel Ascona A crossing the finish line just over a second ahead of Sanjin Pjanic in a VW Golf 2 16 V. Uwe Sahler in a BMW 2002 had finished on top in practice. The colourful field of vehicles also included a Peugeot 205 GTI, several Opel Kadett Es, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta and BMW 2002.
In the Youngtimer Trophy B race, Daniel Schrey was once again able to clinch victory in his Porsche 935 K1.
The two equally fast BMW M1 and Ford GT40 (aluminum) were unable to convert good lap times into an optimal overall performance and dropped out or fell back. There were also some beautiful cars to be seen in Trophy B, including several M3s, a 924 Carrera GTS, several 190Es and also an Opel Ascona 400 and two Kadett Cs.
"Gran Turismo" with large distances
The Daren Mk3 drove its own race in the HTGT, with Rehkopf/Rehkopf two laps ahead at the end, followed by two 911s and a Ford Esort, then the BMW 2002 from Bischoff-Gebauer with a further lap gap. Only Felix Haas in the Lola T210 could have posed a threat to the Daren, but he retired after just four laps.
However, the HTGT field was certainly one of the most attractive of the weekend, with a wide range of fast cars from the sixties on the grid, including the Porsche 914/6, Porsche 904, Alfa Romeo Sprint GTA, Alfa Romeo 1750 GT-Am, Ford Lotus Cortina, Ford Mustang GT 350, Ford Escort RS 1600 BDA and Ginetta G12.
Felix Haas was then able to compensate for his retirement from the HTGT with a victory in the Dunlop FHR Endurance race, which he took with a three-lap lead on his certainly superior Chevron B16 ahead of Diederich-Wittke in a Porsche 914/6 GT, who of course competed in a different class.
Formula cars too
Formula 3 cars competed in the AvD Histo Race Cup HRA, where the overall winner was Valerio Leone in a March 783 Novamotor, ahead of Thomas Warken in a Ralt RT3/84 Alfa-Romeo and Michael Ringstrom in a March 753 Toyota. Nikolaj Madsen won the Formula Ford category in a Reynard SF87.
The GLPpro also held regularity races at Hockenheim with its steadily growing field of participants.
The participants will certainly remember this weekend, when snow almost fell at Hockenheim, for a long time to come, even when all their clothes have dried again.
