Traditionally, the "Battle of the Dwarves" starts its races in Oschersleben together with HAIGO (Historische Autorennsport Interessen Gemeinschaft Ostdeutschland). This was once again the case this year. So on the second race weekend of the season, a decimated field of dwarves was prepared for strong competition from HAIGO.
Historische Automobilrennsport Interessengemeinschaft Ostdeutschland (HAIGO)
The Historische Automobilrennsport Interessengemeinschaft Ostdeutschland, HAIGO for short, was founded in 2004 to establish a racing series with historic racing cars from the former Eastern Bloc countries. For over 10 years, it has been presenting formula and touring cars from the period before the political changes in Eastern Europe as part of high-quality events. For fans old and new, it is a rare opportunity to see legendary cars from the East again on modern race tracks under competitive conditions.
Battle of the dwarves - training run
The former vehicles from the "Cup for Peace and Friendship" are a perfect match for the "Battle of the Dwarves", as their engine capacity limit was also 1300 cc until 1985. In addition to the well-known Minis, NSUs, Abarths and 1300cc Histos, vehicles from Lada, Zastava, Skoda and Wartburg also competed in Oschersleben. Not forgetting the guest starters from the Polish Maluch Trophy, who once again made the journey to compete together with the dwarves and drive great races.
After the training sessions, Herbert Wein jr. took pole position in his Mini. The Schroer/Schroer team on NSU followed in second place. However, the other 5 places were already taken by the HAIGO competitors. It was not until 8th place on the grid that a Mini, driven by Herbert Wein Sr.
Kai-Uwe Rossner wins race 1
After the start of race 1, Herbert Wein jr. took the lead. While the competition behind him on a Lada engaged in fierce duels, he was initially able to pull away at the front. Towards the middle of the race, however, things became much more strenuous for the mini driver. Kai-Uwe Rossner had set off in his Lada Nova in pursuit of the leader. He was able to take the lead halfway through the race and never relinquished it until the finish.
Schroer/Schroer came third in the first race and thus won the NSU Trophy. The winner in the Abarth division was once again Hubert Nagl.
The winners of the 2nd race
At the start of the second race, the situation was similar to that in race 1. After the start, a duel again developed between Wein jr. and Rossner. The Mini led the field after the first lap. However, the fastest NSU TT was already waiting for its chance in third place. After lap 8, the time had come. Andreas Vielgut crossed the start line as overall leader in 1st place with his NSU. From the top, controlling the overall field, he extended his lead to 20 seconds and secured the race win in the 2nd race.
In 2nd place, again as winner of the British Car Trophy, was Herbert Wein jr. ahead of Kai-Uwe Rossner's Lada Nova.
The winner in the Abarth division this time was Christoph Hürter in his Abarth Fiat 127.
The Battle of the Dwarves is looking forward to starting a little further east on the map of Germany at its next race weekend. At the end of June, it will head to the time-honored Sachsenring for this year's Sachsenring Classics.
