If the Goodwood Revival is a bit too much of a masquerade costume party for you, head to the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) to see and hear classic racing cars in action. From July 9 to 11, 2021, the Legens of Brands Hatch Superprix once again saw plenty of historic racing equipment in action.
23 races were spread over three days and 14 vehicle classes. Unlike in previous years, six races were held on the opening Friday for the first time at this year's edition of the Superprix, which was previously reserved for training and qualifying races.
The racing spectacle was opened by two heats of the "Historic Formula Ford 2000". The subsequent final was won by Graham Fannymore at the wheel of his Reynard SF81, followed by the Formula 3 cars from 1971 to 1984, in which Andrew Smith drove his March 783 to the finish line first.
The rainy Saturday kicked off once again with the Ford Kent monoposti, which made up the largest field with 31 cars. The Classic Formula Ford for vehicles built up to 1982 was won by Cam Jackson in his 1970 Winkelmann WDF2, who later also won the Historic Forumla Ford race up to 1972, despite a brief excursion into the gravel.
The historic and classic Formula 3 cars were followed by the Grand Prix racing cars from before 1966 and the "Thundersports", the endurance racing cars up to and including 1979. James Claridge in the Ford-powered Chevron B23 secured victory here with a 0.4-second lead over Mark Richardson in the Lola T290.
On Sunday, the first class for road-legal cars took to the track with the Historic Road Sports, in which post-war models up to 1969 duel it out. Kevin Kivlochan in the AC Cobra won by less than a second ahead of four Lotus Elans. In the seventies sports car class, Will Plant in the Morgan Plus 8 won by a wafer-thin 0.18 seconds ahead of Jim Dean in the Lotus Europa.
The small racing festival concluded with the Aurora Trophy for cars from the former Formula 5000 as well as Formula 2 and 3. Matt Stetton in the March 712 secured the last victory of the day ahead of Matt Wrigley in the March 782. In the first race on Saturday, the duel had gone the other way round.
