Because the Board of Management had decided to withdraw from Formula 2, the BMW works team celebrated the official farewell race on the last weekend of October 1970 at the Munich-Neubiberg airfield like a funeral. It was the last weekend in October 1970 and the entire BMW Formula 2 team wore mourning corduroys, black armbands adorned the mechanics' overalls and drivers' overalls. Engine boss Paul Rosche, test manager Alex von Falkenhausen and chassis engineer Dieter Basche all joined in the silent protest against the Board of Management's decision. The plan was to end the Formula 2 works commitment at the end of the 1970 season. The pictures of the BMW men's appearance went around the world at the time.
