Since Dan Gurney won the three-hour race in 1962, the almost 6-kilometre-long race track in Daytona has repeatedly served as a venue for international motorsport events. The endurance races in Daytona are still among the most popular dates in the calendar for motorsport fans today. It is therefore not surprising that historic motorsport has also found its way to Florida.
From November 10-13, 2016, historic motorsport teams and the Trans-Am Series took to the race track in Daytona. Historic and modern vehicles competed over three days. The cars were divided into ten groups, ranging from "Vintage Sports Cars" to "Prototype" and "Modern Global GT/Cup Series". There were also eight classes in which points and titles were contested.
The event kicked off on Friday after an introduction for the teams and a test drive had already taken place on Thursday. The audience was treated to good weather and even better racing. The participants of the "Bob Woodman Tire International American Challenge" were the first to start. This was followed by two TransAm races, some sprint races for all categories and a few night races for historic vehicles created the real endurance feeling.
Swiss victory in Florida
Toni Seiler in a Lola T70 Mk III B won the night race in the "Vintage Sports Cars" category by a wide margin, his best lap was clocked at 1:56.450. He also won the 60-minute race, which he had to fight hard for. His rivals Beaumont/Greensall in a McLaren M1B (1966) clocked the best lap just one second slower than Seiler with 1:54.867.
Japanese exotic on the podium
In the "V4" class of the 60s touring cars, Pablo Peon won the night race with his exotic Datsun 510.
The motor sports car equipped with a 2-liter engine is a rare guest on the race track in the USA, even in Europe. Nevertheless, the Datsun 510 is not unknown, as John Morton was able to secure class victories in the overall classification of the Trans-Am Series in 1971 and 1972. The Datsun 510 was also well-known and feared in rallying, with Edgar Herrmann and co-driver Hans Schüller winning the East African Safari Rally in 1970 and the Australian Rally Championship 15 years later in 1985.
The lap times alone reveal that this Nippon car packs a lot of punch: faster than better-engined competitors such as the Datsun 280ZX, Porsche 944 or Porsche 911 SC and also faster than rivals of equal displacement such as the BMW 2002 and Alfa Romeo Spider.
HSR racing season
After this weekend, there is only one race left in the HSR (Historic Sportscar Racing) season, namely the 12-hour race in Sebring, so the drivers really stepped on the gas once again. For the TransAm series, the race in Daytona was even the last of the year.
