I meet 21-year-old Jochen Rindt for the first time in the fall of 1963 at the Bückeburg-Achum airfield race near Hanover. He and his Viennese friend Curd Bardi-Barry had been driving two Cooper Formula Junior racing cars from racecourse to racecourse all year. Kurt Ahrens from Braunschweig, also a fast Formula Junior driver, introduces me to the two Austrians. In conversation with Rindt, I realize that we are almost neighbors - he has a second home in Mainz. He has a spice mill there that he inherited from his late parents. I live "next door" in Wiesbaden and have just set up my own, mini editorial office.
