In the history of motor racing, 1907 can confidently be described as the Fiat year. The fact that Vincenzo Lancia had won the 1904 race in Brescia in a 75 hp Fiat was still fresh in the memory. The following year, the Italian brand even managed to set the best time at Mont Ventoux, which astonished the French competition. Such successful brands as Darracq, De Dietrich, Mors and Rochet-Schneider had prepared for this famous hill climb in 1905, and at best the Mercedes under Thery was still reckoned to be a serious opponent. But in their 100 hp monster, the ambitious Turin team had a weapon with which they could break all previous records.
