Alfred Neubauer is remembered as a very specific person, the name sounds familiar, even if you haven't often been involved in motorsport, and if you have, then you know exactly what a big influence Neubauer had at Daimler-Benz and Mercedes. Probably the best-known story is the story of the Silver Arrows. Neubauer himself wrote in his memoirs that the brainwave came one night in June 1934. Shortly beforehand, it had been discovered that the weight of the Mercedes racing cars was too great. Without further ado, Neubauer scraped the white paint off the car et voilà. As great as this story sounds, today we are pretty sure that it was made up in the case of the Silver Arrows. Not only was the Eifel race advertised without weight limits, the paint stripping number could never be proven with pictures (before/after), rather the opposite is the case.
