Few designers have left their mark on Formula 1 like Colin Chapman. The Lotus boss and designer possessed enormous innovative power and was always on the lookout for new technical solutions. At the 500 miles of Indianapolis, he was the first to use a mid-engine and the concept was ultimately to prevail, as the Lotus models 34 and 38 proved.
