The Zoute Grand Prix took place for the seventh time in Knokke-Heist from October 6 to 9, 2016. In addition to the Bonhams auction, the main attraction was once again the Concours d'Elégance. While the first Zoute events attracted 5000 to 7000 visitors, there are now over 100,000 who are interested in the Concours as well as the rally and the auction.
The 2016 event benefited from beautiful autumn weather, which really showed off the location and cars to their best advantage.
The many-member jury, which included Adolfo Orsi, Andrea Zagato, Philip Kantor, Michael Bock and Derek Bell, had a good dozen prizes to distribute among around five dozen beautiful cars.
Otto Vu Festival
The gathering of six Fiat Otto Vu was announced as a special highlight. And indeed, the variants from Fiat (Rapi), Zagato, Vignale and Ghia (Supersonic) delighted the audience.
But that's not all, two Siata 208s were also on show at the Concours, one as a Spider and the other as a very special coupé.
Anyone interested in the rare eight-cylinder cars with which Fiat wanted to demonstrate what it was capable of in the mid-fifties could not avoid a visit to Knokke-Heist.
A Rapi coupé from 1953, which took part in the Mille Miglia of the same year, was voted "Best of Show" in keeping with the unique encounter of the 8V variants. The Supersonic Coupé received the "most sensitive restoration" award.
The other BMW 507
The BMW 507 is one of the icons of the fifties, the lines of Graf Goertz are hard to beat in terms of elegance. Nevertheless, Giovanni Michelotti tried his hand at the BMW sports car at the time and procured a chassis from the Italian BMW importer. The result, which was designed by Scaglietti and assembled by Vignale, is more reminiscent of the later Alfa Romeo 2000/2600 convertibles from Touring than of the Count's original curved design.
Whether this work, which was shown for the first time at the Turin Motor Show, later led Michelotti to commission the BMW 700 would need to be investigated in more detail. In any case, despite its uniqueness, the BMW was not awarded a prize at the Concours.
The prototype of the Ferrari Daytona
The Ferrari 365 GTB4 "Daytona", built from 1968 to 1973, is also an icon. The production version is much more impressive in terms of form than the 1968 prototype, which won the class in Knokke-Heist, not least due to the design of the front.
While the front was still based on its predecessor, the two sets of three miniature tail lights at the rear were not quite as bold as the design of the production version. The flank, however, already had almost final features.
Rarities non-stop
The organizers are to be commended for the successful selection of Concours cars. In addition to the vehicles already mentioned, a rare Osca 1600 GT with a Zagato body also found its way to Belgium.
You don't see an Apollo GT every day either, and among the pre-war participants were a whole series of unique cars, such as the Bentley 8 Litre from 1930, the Alfa Romeo 2300 Corsa Spider Zagato from 1932 or the unique Avions Voisin C23 from 1932 with Graber bodywork.
The Worblaufen Cabriolet based on a 1949 Jaguar Mark VI is also a special car that was ultimately honored for its long journey.
The 1989 Reliant Scimitar, which did not fit in at all with the other vehicles, caused some surprised looks.
Nonetheless, this car was also a rarity, as the manufacturer at the time, Middlebridge, was only able to build 78 cars before it had to close the doors.
Preserved as built
Only a few Bugatti 35s survived the last 80 years with their first bodywork. The Type 35 shown here (Chasis 4449) with a two-liter eight-cylinder engine (no. 27) changed hands many times, once even in exchange for a motorcycle, but never had to be restored and thus received the award for the best-preserved car at the Zoute Grand Prix.
In addition to the cars already mentioned, the class winners were a Talbot-Lago T120 Cabriolet from 1939, an Aston Martin DB2 Cabriolet from 1951, a Pegaso Z102 with touring bodywork from 1954, a Lancia Aurelia B12 from 1955, an Aston Martin DB4 Series II from 1962 and a Porsche 911 R from 1967, the first car of this type to be built.
