The Planai-Classic is the traditional start to a new classic car year between New Year's Eve and the Three Kings' Day. While the Ennstal-Classic became a cult event in summer under the motto "Driving in the last paradise", the Planai-Classic has become a winter legend: Driving on snow and ice like in the old days, with cars built before December 31, 1972.
The Planai-Classic starts on January 4 with a qualifying session at the Gröbminger trotting track. The 50 teams will then take on a 180 km night course, which will first lead via Aich to a 30-minute pit stop in Schladming. From there, the route continues via Ramsau and Filzmoos to an ice slalom in the Altenmarkt area and then back to Gröbming. A total of eight special stages in the Enns Valley and the side valleys are built into the route.
The participants experience the big kick on the second day, where two runs are on the program on the snow-covered 5.9 km long Planaistrasse. In the second heat, the uphill time set in the first heat must be repeated to the nearest hundredth of a second. Sliding and drifting without electronic aids is the order of the day.
The exciting floodlit finale will be staged in the finish stadium next to the "Planet Planai". For a car and skier combined classification, the first 15 in the overall car classification will be drawn by lot for ski legends. There are two runs of a night giant slalom on the famous Planai finish slope, with the time of the first run to be copied to a hundredth of a second in the second. This is used to create a combined car and skier ranking.
This year, Christian and Margot Baier in a Lea Francis P-type (40 hp) and the German team Dr. Ulrich and Michael Knapp in a 160 hp Mercedes-Benz Kompressor from 1927 are the oldest cars.
Other vehicles in the starting field: Aston Martin DB2/4, MG A, Opel Kapitän, Opel Ascona-Rallye, Saab 96, VW Beetle, Austin Healey Sprite, Porsche 356, Porsche 911T, Porsche 912, Volvo P544, Volvo 1800S, Volvo 123GT, Alfa Romeo 1600 Sprint, Alfa Giulia Super, Alfa 1750 GTV, Mercedes-Benz 230SL, 280SL, Mini Cooper S, Jaguar E-Type, Triumph TR4, Skoda R110, Fiat Abarth 124 Coupe 1800, BMW 2002 Tii, Datsun 240Z, Mini Monte Carlo, Ford Escort RS2000, Fiat 124 Sport Coupe and a Ferrari 365 GT4.
