The GP Brugger Schachen took place for the first time on June 22, 2013. There were already role models with "Indianapolis" Oerlikon and the Lenzerheide Motor Classics, but the fact that the event was blessed with good weather and an impressive turnout of spectators could probably not have been foreseen in advance, so the organizers and participants were all the more delighted.
The charm of four bends
The small town of Brugg is located between Aarau, Basel and Zurich and has just over 10,000 inhabitants. In Brugg's "Schachen", which is actually a district of Brugg, there is a picturesque little circuit between trees and the course of the Aare, which is normally used for bicycle races.
For once, however, around 150 sports and racing vehicles, including around 30 motorcycles, took to the oval. The circuit, consisting of four ninety-degree bends and two long, slightly curved straights as well as two crossovers, did not prove to be very demanding in terms of driving, but the short distance of just under one kilometer had positive aspects for the spectators, as the vehicles passed the grandstand frequently.
Due to the narrow track width, overtaking maneuvers were only possible with mutual consideration and the maximum speed was limited by a fast-moving "pace car".
Without interruption
After the obligatory drivers' briefing, the race started on time at 09:00 and then continued almost without interruption into the evening hours. Nine racing fields, cozy Corsi of classic cars and military vehicles alternated with each other. As soon as one field had left the course, the next one was led onto the track.
The course was tightly controlled by the race management and felt perfectly organized from a spectator's perspective.
Crowd of spectators
The grandstand along the first straight was already filling up in the early hours of the morning, and the spectators were packed along the edge of the track. The queues in front of the barbecue grew longer and longer towards midday. Thanks to pleasant temperatures and mostly sunny weather, the efforts of the organizers were rewarded with an impressive crowd.
However, the lines thinned out relatively early in the afternoon, perhaps as a result of the somewhat evenly paced program, which saw the individual fields take to the track three times. Perhaps additional and special attractions between the runs could have provided a little more excitement.
Diverse field of vehicles
Around 150 vehicles were entered, the oldest an American La France Type 10 Speedster from 1915, offering almost 100 years of automotive history to look at, listen to and smell.
Three motorcycle groups, three sports and touring car fields and three racing car fields were at the start, supplemented by the "FABAM" group, which showed a cross-section of road and luxury vintage cars, as well as the military parade, which even included a Panzer 68 tank making its bloodcurdling rounds.
The unusual buckle dart
Christian Hartmann drove a vehicle that many spectators were probably seeing for the first time around the oval: the white convertible was a Buckle Dart from Australia. Bill Buckle had imported large numbers of Googomobil chassis at the end of the 1950s and fitted them with plastic bodies modeled on the original from Germany.
For the Buckle Dart, however, racing engineer Stan Brown designed a beautiful open two-seater body made of fiberglass without doors. The car weighed around 380 kg and the two-stroke engine produced 15 hp or more, depending on the precision work and displacement. Of the approximately 700 units produced, only a few are likely to have survived, and even fewer are likely to have found their way to continental Europe.
Saab Sonett with a two-stroke sound
Another rarity is the Saab Sonett II from 1966, which was launched in Brugg. Built in 1966, it is one of the early models with a two-stroke engine, which with 60 hp, approx. 660 kg and around 170 km/h was also successful in racing. The two-stroke engine driving the front wheels soon had to make way for a more modern four-stroke V4 engine, which benefited the exhaust plume but reduced competitiveness in racing.
Four times three wheels
Three Morgan Three Wheelers took part in Field 3, which was also made up of motorcycle sidecars. Equipped with engines of between 1.1 and 1.3 liters displacement, the three vehicles with single rear wheels demonstrated how Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan produced them from 1911 as an inexpensive motorized vehicle. The three models equipped with V2 front engines, which were built between 1929 and 1933, delighted the spectators with their special appearance and the spirited drivers.
It was not planned that a fourth car would become a three-wheeler. Shortly after the chequered flag was lowered, a Fiat Abarth 850 TC Nürburgring lost its left rear wheel and had to leave the track on the recovery vehicle.
Purebred racing cars
In addition to rare road vehicles, racing car rarities from past eras were also on display on the oval. The pre-war fraction was particularly well represented with Alvis, Riley, Ford, Nash, Amilcar, American La France, Alfa Romeo, MG and Healey, while Georg Kaufmann's Maserati 250 F represented the Grand Prix cars of the fifties.
Many road cars optimized for racing such as the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, two Opel Kadett GT/E or several MG and Triumph racing sports cars kept the racing fans entertained.
Small mishaps
Technical problems plagued the one or other participant and repeatedly led to the safety and recovery vehicle being called out. However, many of the stranded sports and racing cars were repaired and could be seen again as the event progressed.
Unfortunately, some of the expected cars never took to the circuit, especially the field of formula and racing sports cars was very thin and in other fields there were only a handful or fewer participants on the track at the end of the twenty-minute "stints" due to technical difficulties.
However, the spectators were satisfied and toasted each other in the marquee in the hope that this new event would be continued in the future.
In addition to the picture gallery in this event report, there are two additional galleries showing practically all the participating vehicles in over 400 pictures.
