The mode is as simple as it is practical. From 09:30 to approx. 16:00, every classic car driver who has the time and inclination can park their vehicle on the drained ice field on the Dolder on the noble Zürichberg as part of the DolderClassics and pass the time looking at the numerous gems that have arrived. This also works on Mother's Day and many a mother enjoyed an unusual drive.
Small and large
Anyone can take part in the "DolderClassics" meeting without any brand restrictions or entry criteria, as long as the vehicle is from 1977 or earlier. That's why a small Austin Mini stands next to a voluminous Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, or a Fiat 500 Nuova next to a Cadillac.
Cheap and expensive
The numerous spectators who have come to the event enjoy the cheap Trabant just as much as the expensive Ferrari sports cars or Maserati beauties. The main thing is that you don't see the cars every day. People talk shop next to a Triumph just as much as in the shadow of the hood of a Jensen 451.
Slow and fast
Whether a vehicle reaches a maximum speed of 90 km/h or up to 270 km/h doesn't really matter either. Pre-war vehicles such as an Amilcar or Citroën attract the attention of those present just as much as a Maserati 450 S or an Isdera Imperator 108i, which was admitted despite the age limit.
Landlubbers and amphibians
A single water-suited amphibious vehicle, an Amphicar, ventured among the landlubbers, who made up the majority. These came on two, three or four wheels. Open and closed bodywork alternated.
Rarities and special features
A Delahaye 135M from Saoutchik, a wonderfully green one-off from Zagato from the 1970s, a Barrow's Special from 1948 - for most spectators, there were probably vehicles that they had never seen before. That is also what makes this brand-independent car meeting so special. And you don't see a Maserati Ghibli Spyder or a Fiat 1200 Cabriolet every day.
Balanced and well organized
With several hundred vehicles, the first DolderClassics 2012 was not bursting at the seams, also thanks to the excellent organization of Christoph Lehmann and his team. The vehicles that had arrived were quickly marshaled and there was enough space on the artificial ice rink to accommodate all the arriving vehicles.
Despite the rather cool temperatures, there were only satisfied faces to be seen and we can already look forward to the next event on June 10, 2012, when another highlight will be an auction by the Oldtimer Galerie Toffen with 30 to 40 rare classics, including the much-discussed MBM Sport from 1960.
