Back in 2020, the Classic Gala Schwetzingen was one of the few major concours events allowed to take place. From 3 to 5 September 2021, all the stops were once again pulled out for the 17th edition to organize a beauty contest of superlatives in the spacious Schwetzingen Palace Park.
There were just as many anniversaries to celebrate as there were vehicle owners who wanted to show off their cars to the public. And the weather also cooperated, and how? Organizer Johannes Hübner could not complain about three days of late summer weather.
3G and time zones
Of course, the coronavirus pandemic and the associated measures took their toll. As in 2020, visitors had to admire the attractions in two shifts (09:00 to 13:00, 14:00 to 18:00) and the 3-G rule applied, i.e. a certificate was required to prove that you were either recovered, tested or vaccinated.

This probably only stopped a few classic car enthusiasts from attending, even if at times it felt like more people had already streamed through the castle park at previous Classic Gala events.
100 years of Carrozzeria Ghia
There is no consensus among experts as to the date of birth of the coachbuilder Ghia, with 1915, 1916 and 1921 being mentioned, but at least the latter made it possible for the Classic Gala to celebrate 100 years of Carrozzeria Ghia. The company's history, with its various lines of business, provided ample opportunities to celebrate the anniversary with car models.
The focus was on the 1954 Chrysler Special GS1, which already adorns the poster. It belongs to a Swiss collector and comes from the second Mini series of almost 50 coupés built by Ghia on behalf of Chrysler. The design language was probably developed between Virgil Exner and the Ghia designers and the car on display in Schwetzingen is certainly not lacking in elegance.
It was promptly voted "Best of Show". And it looked really magnificent with the castle in the background.
There would have been no shortage of competition, as the Ghia company is of course also known for its VW Karmann-Ghia.
The prototype was created at the time in collaboration between Karmann and the designers of Ghia, including Luigi Segre, Felice Mario Boano and Gian Paolo Boano. Those who took a closer look at the first model from the VW Museum also recognized some similarities with the Chrysler Special GS1, which in turn had been influenced by Virgil Exner and his concept cars. The result even convinced Volkswagen at the time and so the Type 14 was produced in relatively large numbers from 1955.
However, the class winner of the Ghia group was the Ghia 450 SS convertible from 1967, followed by the aforementioned Karmann-Ghia Type 14 and the Fiat 2300 S Coupé, which was also designed by Ghia.
The Maserati Ghibli from 1969, also associated with Ghia and designed by Giugiaro at the time in the service of the Carrozzeria, won the "Best Supersport pre 1970" award.
100 years of Maybach
An impressive collection of Maybach vehicles could be enjoyed right at the entrance. Maybach can also celebrate 100 years in 2021 and the cars of the 1920s and 1930s in particular represented the ultimate in what money could buy at the time.
Almost a dozen cars from this era were on display, including a SW 38 Cabriolet from 1937, which took first prize in Class I (Maybach brand of honor), followed by a SW 38 Cabriolet with four doors from 1938 and a SW 35 saloon.
The special racing car from 1920 from the Technik Museum Sinsheim was a particular attraction. With its 23-liter six-cylinder engine and chain drive, it attracted a lot of attention.
60 years of the Jaguar E-Type
Another anniversary celebrated in Schwetzingen in front of the palace was 60 years of Jaguar E-Types. You could probably have filled half the park with E-Types, as the sports car launched in 1961 is one of the most popular classics of all time.

However, they concentrated on a small selection and showed, for example, a very early convertible and the various series. The "Jaguar E-Type Trophy" was then won by a Jaguar E-Type S3 OTS from 1973.
110 years of Chevrolet
As part of the 9th USCCC (US Classic Car Concours), reference was made to 110 years of Chevrolet, among other things, but the Chevrolet Corvette was also presented in almost all its facets, supplemented by a presentation of the eighth edition Corvette C8 with mid-engine.

"USCCC Best of Show" was a red Plymouth Fury Convertible from 1960, followed by a Ford Mustang III Hardtop from 1973 and a Chevrolet Independence from 1931.
There was certainly no shortage of attractions in the "American" part of the Classic Gala. Whether fins, pickups, sports cars or pre-war classics, there were cars of all types on site. And there was also no shortage of American-style catering and the accompanying background music.
American automobiles could also be admired in the Classic Gala Concours classes, whether they came from Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Ford, Packard, Plymouth or Studebaker.
Special bodies
There was no shortage of unique and special cars from coachbuilders in Schwetzingen in 2021.
There were two Graber creations, a Talbot 120 Cabriolet from 1956 and a Bentley R-Type Coupé from 1953.
The runner-up in the "Best of Show" classification, however, was the BMW 328 from 1938, which was given a two-seater roadster body in steel/aluminium mixed construction by hand at Vignale in 1949 and was barely recognizable as a BMW.
Of course, many of the Rolls-Royces and Bentleys present also had special bodies, of which the elegant Bentley-based "La Sarthe Coupé" was an interesting example.
Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Bugatti, for example, were also happy to call on the services of specialized coachbuilders, and examples of each of these brands were on display, with the Bugatti Type 57 Gangloff and the Lancia Aprilia Berlina Sport Viotti certainly attracting a lot of attention.
Bread-and-butter
A special feature of the Classic Gala every year is that you not only get to see expensive and rare cars, but also the vehicles that populated our roads in significant numbers 30 or 50 years ago.
Whether Citroën 11 BL, DKW F91, Hanomag Autobahn 1.3 liter, Mercedes-Benz 170 V or VW K70, these cars were just as admired at the Classic Gala as the exotics.
Small cars and big cars
Every year, Schwetzingen also attracts a considerable number of small and very small cars.
2021 was no exception and anyone wandering through the park's connecting roads would come across Messerschmitt, Fuldamobil, BMW Isetta or the Mopetta.
A rare Gutbrod Sport Roadster from 1951 with Wendler bodywork was also on display and was somehow reminiscent of the cars from Duckburg.
And the "Volkswagen" that Josef Ganz developed with the Standard 200, commonly known as the "Maikäfer", was also a comparatively tiny automobile with chain drive and optimized for minimal purchase and operating costs as early as 1933.

In the fifties and sixties, the Fiat brand was happy to take on the role of the financially affordable and practical small car. With models such as the 500, 600 and 850, they had several arrows in their quiver and a good number of them were on display in the Schlosspark in Schwetzingen.
There were also rare variants to admire, such as the Berlinetta by Monterosa based on the Fiat 600 from 1956 designed by Giovanni Michelotti or the Fiat 600 Berlina from 1959 with Zagato bodywork from 1959, which is still completely original and in its original paint finish.
Another rarity in this country is the Fiat 133 from 1974, which was actually created as a Seat in Spain on the basis of the 850 platform with rear engine and is only registered in Germany two dozen times.
Those who prefer to look at large cars rather than small ones certainly didn't miss out at the Classic Gala either. The spectrum of large cars ranged from pre-war Audis to the "big Mercedes" 600, which was on display in three different versions.
Old and young
While the older cars, including some over 100 years old, were displayed in the front part of the park, youngtimer fans were more likely to find their choice of exhibits further back, including a TVR Tuscan from the year 2000, a Ferrari F355 and a Porsche 911 GT3.

The really old cars included some rarities, such as a Brennabor, a Protos and a Jewett Six Special De Luxe from 1925.
Sporty
Of course, the sports car faction in Schwetzingen was also able to show that it was suitable for a Concours. Whether Opel CD Frua, Mercedes-Benz C111 or Porsche 956 with Le Mans history, sports car fans also found their favorite somewhere in the palace park.
Of course, there were also various Porsche 911s, VW Porsches, Jaguar XKs and the Mercedes SL League. And what couldn't be found in the Concours could perhaps be seen on a club stand.
Exotic
People also attend events like the Classic Gala because they enjoy discovering cars that don't always make it onto the front pages of classic car magazines.
The EMW 340/7 from 1954 is a good example of this. It was built as a station wagon at the Eisenach engine plant and just 364 units were produced. The body consisted of a mixture of steel/aluminum and wooden elements. The engine was the two-liter inline six-cylinder that was also used in a similar form in the BMW 315 to 328.
Cars with a plastic body are also usually considered exotic, if they are not called Corvettes. The original Alpine models A 106 and A 108 were among those on display in Schwetzingen.
The Lotus Esprit was on show as an S1 and S3 variant, the latter with a James Bond film look, ready for the ski trip to Cortina.
And the Thurner and Melkus gullwing-door mid-engined sports cars are also among the very rare vehicles.
The list could be extended indefinitely.
Sad
A Mercedes-Benz 220, which had been badly damaged by the floods and mud, referred to the terrible storms in the Ahr valley. The former Concours vehicle is in need of a complete restoration.
The representatives of Württembergische, who had their stand right next door, commented that a good insurer only reveals itself in the event of a claim.
Very special BMW E3
The Wundercar Collection, which focuses entirely on the BMW E3 series, was shown as a world premiere. Among other things, a two-door convertible called "California" and a Group 1 racing version of the BMW 2800 were on display.

The "New Horizon" art car was also on display.
Station wagon festival at Ford
The clubs make a significant contribution to the success of the Classic Gala every year. The Old Ford Friends were also particularly active in 2021 and put on a small special show with estate cars that have been called Turnier since 1959. Several Taunus generations were also on display.

But of course other brand clubs also made sure that their vehicles were not forgotten, whether it was Porsche, Mercedes-Benz or Glas.
One time zone was too short
For those who really wanted to see everything and didn't want to miss out on a tarte flambée or Maultaschen, one "time zone" was probably too short. There was plenty to see and discover, even if the once popular driving demonstrations did not take place again in 2021. At least the occasional Benz bike was seen winding through the park.
The prizes were awarded late on Sunday afternoon, which meant that some participants went home with a veritable collection of trophies. And anyway, there were almost only satisfied, albeit sometimes sweaty, faces to be seen on Sunday evening.
By the way, if you would like to have a different perspective on the Classic Gala and are interested in peripheral phenomena, please refer to the picture story that was also taken in Schwetzingen.
