When the car manufacturer Willys-Overland presented the prototype of the jeep to the US Army in 1940 with the "Willys Quad", the company already had a 37-year history. It had started with the "Overland" brand in 1903. In 1907, John N. Willys took over the company, which had run into financial difficulties and was subsequently renamed "Willys-Overland". Until 1940, the company was mainly in business as a supplier of passenger cars, with varying degrees of success, but the Jeep opened up a completely new segment, which in the early years naturally benefited exclusively from the army business. With the end of the Second World War, however, new buyer segments were in demand and so a much more versatile vehicle was built on the basis of the standard Jeep.
