People line the road to the left and right, laughing and clapping. This is how Mille Miglia participants must feel. But we're not in Emilia Romagna, we're in central Switzerland, in Giswil on Lake Sarnen to be precise. And we are arriving in Giswil as part of the OiO caravan from Sarnen.
Largest classic car meeting in Central Switzerland
OiO stands for "Oldtimer in Obwalden", an annual gathering of old cars (and other motorized vehicles) of all colours, makes and origins. The enterprising Ruedi Müller and his crew call for the largest classic car event in Central Switzerland every year around Pentecost, and classic car owners from near and far respond to the call with great enthusiasm on June 11 and 12, 2011.
Wide range of vehicles
A good 500 classic cars (and a few youngtimers) represent the entire wealth of the automobile as a cultural asset and its 125-year history. The oldest car on the start list dates back to 1888, a Flocken electric car. Steam cars are just as much a part of the OiO as steam rollers, tractors and motorcycles. The pre-war section is very well stocked with over 100 vehicles. Various Ford T models, a Martini (Swiss-made), a Fiat Fiacre, and various models from Packard, Austin, Sunbeam, Rolls Royce, Singer, MG, Alvis, Riley, Peugeot, Dodge, SS Jaguar, Cord, Mercedes, Vauxhall, Bentley, etc. are lined up in the village center of Sarnen on Saturday. The brands Bentley (9 cars), BMW (14 cars), Ford (39 cars), Jaguar (26 cars), Mercedes Benz (29 cars), MG (24 cars) and Rolls Royce (19 cars) are particularly well represented.
Sports cars and limousines of the post-war period
No less impressive than the pre-war selection is the parade of post-1945 vehicles: beautiful Mercedes-Benz convertibles and coupés, Jaguar XK 120s, MGs from the T series, Citroën Légère parked next to various VW Beetles, Triumphs, Hudson, Studebakers and Opel Rekord. Almost every spectator has probably seen cars from their youth, cars they rode in the back seat of or looked longingly at from the roadside. The breadth of the range is enormous, with vehicles that were only built in very small numbers standing side by side with million-selling successes. In almost all of them, however, you can see the love that the owner has lavished on these fine pieces.
Unpretentious program
The program of the OiO Meeting 2011 is clearly laid out and primarily designed to present and view beautiful cars. On the first day, the cars (and motorcycles and tractors) arrive in Sarnen and are lined up in the village center. After a short drive of a few kilometers along Lake Sarnen, Giswil is approached in the afternoon. The weather is cool and damp, but it doesn't rain too much. On Sunday, when the weather is fine, a drive to Engelberg invites you to give your classic car a spin. All around, various catering options invite you to enjoy the local food and drink on offer and experience the conviviality of the classic car society
Steam engines, tractors and the railroad
"Giswil under steam" is the name of the simultaneous gathering of over 10 steam engines in Giswil, complemented by a steam train from the Brünig Railway. The air is accordingly thick with smoke when the OiO participants arrive in Giswil on Saturday afternoon. However, seeing old steam engines in operation is certainly a good reason for the extremely large number of visitors not to think about CO2 and fine dust, but to admire the antique technology.
Voting for the most beautiful classic cars by the public
On Saturday, the spectators present will vote for the most beautiful classic cars by SMS. In the pre-war category, the Fiat Fiacre from 1910 (number 7) came out on top, followed by the Ford T Touring from 1913 (number 11) and the Ford T Torpedo from 1911 (number 9). In the post-war category, the public liked the 1956 Cadillac Coupe de Ville (number 187) best. It was followed by a Jaguar XK 120 FHC from 1952 (number 152) and the Nash Metropolitan from 1957 (number 202).
