Summary
The sensation did not happen. It was planned for the 1969 Geneva Motor Show and the star was the NSU K 70, the new mid-range saloon from Neckarsulm. The premiere was canceled at short notice, not by NSU, but by Volkswagen, as VW had merged with NSU shortly before. But a year later, the K 70 was reborn as a Volkswagen and launched on the market. This report describes the history of the NSU/VW K 70 and shows an early example from 1970 in many pictures. The report is supplemented with archive photos and advertisements from the period.

The sensation did not happen. It had been planned for the 1969 Geneva Motor Show and the star was the NSU K 70, the new mid-range saloon from Neckarsulm. The premiere was canceled at short notice, not by NSU, but by Volkswagen, which had merged with NSU shortly before. NSU had two problems at the end of the sixties. There was a significant gap between the revolutionary NSU Ro 80 luxury saloon with Wankel engine and the NSU Prinz/1000/1200, and at the same time, as a small car manufacturer, the company was limited in terms of development funds and a constant target for potential takeovers. However, the NSU development department was not deterred by the limited financial resources and began to develop a new mid-range passenger car as a station wagon and notchback saloon from January 1965. The design was entrusted to Claus Luthe, who had already achieved extraordinary things with the Prinz 4 and the Ro 80.
