Summary
The VW 1303 Cabriolet was built by Karmann from 1973 to 1980, almost 115,000 of them. At the time, it was the cheapest way to transport five people in the open air and it was loved, even today. This driving report summarizes the history of the open-top Volkswagen and tries to find out why the Beetle Cabriolet has become one of the most popular classics. Five brochures and countless archive photos (from 1938 to 1980) provide an insight into the development and nature of the open-top Beetle.

The radio plays Rod Stewart's "I am sailing .... home again" and the song fits perfectly with the VW 1303 Cabriolet! You immediately feel at home in the classic from Wolfsburg. The air fans through your hair, the comfortable chassis lets the Beetle sail on the asphalt. From the rear, you can hear the boxer engine, which is so far away that it almost sounds like an outboard motor. The upright panoramic windshield hardly takes away any visibility and the roof is of course open so that you can navigate according to the position of the sun. "It's nice to be in the world ....when the sun is shining for young and old" sang Roy Black and Anita in the early seventies, the very year that Volkswagen presented the 1303 as the ultimate last variant of the successful Beetle. And of course there was also a convertible version of the 1303, which could look back on a long tradition.
