40 years ago, Renault celebrated the first victory of a turbo Formula 1 racing car with the RS10. Subsequently, the turbo engine was also widely used in production cars and mostly powered the top versions of the various model series. It therefore made sense to also use a turbo engine in the successful R5 series, and this happened with the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo from 1980 to 1984. In 1984, the first generation of the R5, of which over 5.5 million were built, was replaced. Not an easy task! Although the second edition of the Renault 5, often called "The Little Friend" in advertising, was not so clearly different from its predecessor for many onlookers, almost everything was actually new.
