Summary
In 1969, Volkswagen and Porsche presented the jointly marketed VW-Porsche 914, which was available with a four-cylinder 1.7-liter engine from VW and a two-liter six-cylinder boxer engine from Porsche. The Porsche version was around 60% more expensive, but also offered driving performance that the 911 could not have bettered. The test drivers were enthusiastic, but customers were reluctant to buy, so after three years a simpler replacement was made available. This driving report gets to the bottom of the Porsche 914-6, showing it in many current and historical pictures and in sales material.

Volkswagen and Porsche announced their joint sports car as early as the spring of 1969, but development had of course begun years earlier in the mid-1960s. Volkswagen intended to follow up the Karmann-Ghia with a successor, while Porsche was looking for an alternative to the Porsche 912, which was not selling very well.
