Summary
From 1960 to 1975, Peugeot built the 404 limousine in France, which is an integral part of almost every French film of the time, as the robust car served as a police car, cab, fire engine and, of course, as private transportation for detectives, estate agents and businesswomen. And almost 1.9 million times, even in our latitudes. This report characterizes the charming Frenchman and attempts to explain why this particular car was so popular. Many historical illustrations and sales brochures as well as an instruction manual complete the extensively illustrated article.

While the 403 still had a pontoon design, the 404 shone with the modern Farina trapezoidal line, which was also found on models from Lancia (Flaminia) and BMC (Austin A60) and promptly triggered criticism of confusion and a lack of brand identity.
