Opel Astra GSi 16V - new name, new luck?
Summary
From 1991 to 1998, Opel built the Astra F, which was the first Kadett to no longer bear the traditional name. Once again there was a GSi model and, as with the predecessor Kadett E, the two-liter engine with 16 valves produced 150 hp and made the Astra GSi 220 km/h fast. This vehicle report describes the successful Astra GSi model, shows it in contemporary pictures and places it in the context of the competition at the time.

The first Opel Astra will be 25 years old in 2016. It succeeded the Opel Kadett Generation E in 1991 and, like its predecessor, had front-wheel drive. And it was also available as a sporty GSi model right from the start. The name change was part of Opel's strategy at the time of using artificial names ending in "a" as type designations. Kadett E was followed by Astra F, the model series code was continued according to the same logic. The relatively rounded Kadett was followed by the more modern and straight-lined Astra, which from the outset was available with three or five doors, but only with a hatchback. However, the estate and notchback variants followed only a few months later.
