With the "T-Wagen" of the W123 model series, Mercedes-Benz had created the genre of the lifestyle estate, and with the successor of the W124 model series, the Sindelfingen-based company doubled down and added an extremely sophisticated all-wheel drive system. Now it was not only possible to transport a lot, but also to do so in almost any weather and road conditions. However, the Mercedes-Benz 300 TE 4Matic became very expensive, which prevented it from becoming widespread. For Mercedes-Benz, all-wheel drive belonged in off-road vehicles such as the G-model or commercial vehicles such as the Unimog for decades. Mercedes Chief Development Officer Friedrich van Winsen is reported to have said that all-wheel drive was a necessary evil for overpowered front-wheel drive vehicles. But when Audi came onto the market with the Quattro drive system and its success became apparent, Mercedes also had to rethink, especially as BMW had already taken the lead early on in 1985 with the iX all-wheel drive system. Daimler-Benz then presented its own version, called "4Matic", at the IAA. However, it was initially only available in the W124 saloons and estates.
