Summary
Between 1969 and 1976, Mercedes-Benz built the W114 Coupé, also known as the Stroke Eight Coupé, as the 250 C, 250 CE, 280 C and 280 CE. With only minor changes compared to the parallel-built saloon, the Daimler manufacturers were able to give the coupé its own identity, not least because of the noble straight-six engines that served as the drive. This report looks at the technology and peculiarities of the Coupé, describes driving impressions and shows an early vehicle in detail, supplemented by press information from the time.

The understatedly elegant coupé was more likely to win over people who didn't want to attract attention, such as Richard Burton, who even had an alcohol detector fitted (with good reason). However, it was mostly the wives of factory owners, architects or high school teachers who sat behind the wheel of the W114 Coupé. Later, the cars became used cars and their new owners studied or pursued alternative world views and drove hundreds of thousands of kilometers in the coupé, which may even have been decorated with colorful flowers.
