Summary
Mercedes-Benz did not invent the estate; it existed long before the T-series. But Mercedes made the practical, vertical rear door acceptable in the upper and luxury class segment and invented the lifestyle estate with the "T" of the 123 model series. It was available with four or six cylinders, and performance- and comfort-hungry buyers chose the sophisticated 250 T or the 280 TE. This driving report tells the story of the T-series S123 and shows a 250 T in detail, including a promotional video, brochure and sound sample.

Mercedes-Benz did not invent the estate; it existed long before the T-series. But Mercedes made the practical, vertical rear door acceptable in the upper and luxury class segment and thus invented the lifestyle estate. Mercedes-Benz introduced the 123 model series, the successor to the popular /8 models, in January 1976. The solid car initially appeared as a saloon, followed by the coupé in June 1977. The T-series was then presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1977. The "T" stood for "Touristik" and "Transport". The Automobil Revue commented on the occasion of the presentation:"The new 230 T to 300 TD series from Mercedes-Benz finally shows that the estate car can also combine high demands for practicality and elegance."
