Mercedes-Benz did not invent the estate; it existed long before the T-series. But Mercedes made the practical, vertical rear door acceptable in the upper and luxury class segment and invented the lifestyle estate with the "T" of the 123 model series. It was available with four or six cylinders, and performance- and comfort-hungry buyers chose the sophisticated 250 T or the 280 TE.
